a social application of math
One of the things I most enjoy about facebook are the opportunities of learning afforded me by my friends. We cannot all walk the same paths, but we can share portions of our paths with the world.
This is one such insight shared by my "Sweet Caroline" Lynn.
Many thanks.

This is an article that needs to be repeated:
Every Friday afternoon Chase’s teacher asks her students to take out a piece of paper and write down the names of four children with whom they’d like to sit the following week. The children know that these requests may or may not be honored. She also asks the students to nominate one student whom they believe has been an exceptional classroom citizen that week. All ballots are privately submitted to her.
And every single Friday afternoon, after the students go home, Chase’s teacher takes out those slips of paper, places them in front of her and studies them. She looks for patterns.
Who is not getting requested by anyone else?
Who doesn’t even know who to request?
Who never gets noticed enough to be nominated?
Who had a million friends last week and none this week?
You see, Chase’s teacher is not looking for a new seating chart or “exceptional citizens.” Chase’s teacher is looking for lonely children. She’s looking for children who are struggling to connect with other children. She’s identifying the little ones who are falling through the cracks of the class’s social life. She is discovering whose gifts are going unnoticed by their peers. And she’s pinning down- right away- who’s being bullied and who is doing the bullying.
As a teacher, parent, and lover of all children – I think that this is the most brilliant Love Ninja strategy I have ever encountered. It’s like taking an X-ray of a classroom to see beneath the surface of things and into the hearts of students. It is like mining for gold – the gold being those little ones who need a little help – who need adults to step in and TEACH them how to make friends, how to ask others to play, how to join a group, or how to share their gifts with others. And it’s a bully deterrent because every teacher knows that bullying usually happens outside of her eyeshot – and that often kids being bullied are too intimidated to share. But as she said – the truth comes out on those safe, private, little sheets of paper.
As Chase’s teacher explained this simple, ingenious idea – I stared at her with my mouth hanging open. “How long have you been using this system?” I said.
Ever since Columbine, she said. Every single Friday afternoon since Columbine.
Good Lord.
This brilliant woman watched Columbine knowing that ALL VIOLENCE BEGINS WITH DISCONNECTION. All outward violence begins as inner loneliness. She watched that tragedy KNOWING that children who aren’t being noticed will eventually resort to being noticed by any means necessary.
And so she decided to start fighting violence early and often, and with the world within her reach. What Chase’s teacher is doing when she sits in her empty classroom studying those lists written with shaky 11 year old hands - is SAVING LIVES. I am convinced of it. She is saving lives.
And what this mathematician has learned while using this system is something she really already knew: that everything – even love, even belonging – has a pattern to it. And she finds those patterns through those lists – she breaks the codes of disconnection. And then she gets lonely kids the help they need. It’s math to her. It’s MATH.
All is love- even math. Amazing.
Chase’s teacher retires this year – after decades of saving lives. What a way to spend a life: looking for patterns of love and loneliness. Stepping in, every single day- and altering the trajectory of our world.
TEACH ON, WARRIORS. You are the first responders, the front line, the disconnection detectives, and the best and ONLY hope we’ve got for a better world. What you do in those classrooms when no one is watching- it’s our best hope.

Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"
The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman
rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want."
The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice: the clothes probably wouldn't have fit
you anyway."

A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers.
The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"
The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golfers!!
The priest said, "Here comes the greens-keeper. Let's have a word with him."
He said, "Hello George, what's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?"
The greens-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our
clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for nothing any time they want."
The group fell silent for a moment.
The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight."
The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if here's anything she can do
for them."
The engineer said, "Why can't they just play at night?"

An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a
beautiful princess."
He bent over, picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket.
The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay with you for one week."
The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket.
The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want."
Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay with
you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?"
The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog - now that's really

poison i-i-i-vy
Hey, Dood!
I thank you for the photo of us! very nice! I'll try to get a copy this week so you can have it, too.
I'm so glad you have work that keeps your mind and hands busy. What a blessing! I wish I could see that taser cabinet you made - it sounds like a work of art and love. You are so talented with carpentry! I remember that swing you made for Mama and how much she had enjoyed it. Hard to believe how long ago that was.
On Thursday, I went to the VA Clinic about my poison ivy. I had worked in the yard last Saturday and NOT covered up my arms or legs. I did wear my gloves, but it was too hot to wear long pants and long sleeves.
By Wednesday, the wreck on my left arm had spread across my belly and right arm and left leg. Both legs were already pretty scratched up from the blackberry brambles and sticker vines. It's been a real trial, but it's getting better now, since I was put on Zyrtec (daytime), Benadryl (at night), and a 14-day regimen of Prednisone. That's not including the steroid shot they gave me there, or the Calamine lotion and hydrocortisone cream to use as needed. At least the itch is gone - mostly.
School began on the 17th. The students seem to be settling in quite well so far. I'll give them their first test on the 31st.
The Sand Gnats' season is drawing to a close. There's a doubleheader today, due to the rain-out yesterday. If they win both games, they'll have 19 games in this winning streak! G, Gnats!

finding my confidence again
What a slow slog it has been in this effort to recover from the accident.
i thank God that the Fall semester has begun!
That is forcing me out of the house,
into the car,
onto the road.
Sure, I've been going to see my boys of summer... but that is just around the corner from the middle school I attended. My family lived too close for the bus to pick me up, so I walked the mile and a piece to it.
In other words, it's pretty close and I know the non-busy route.
Sure, I've gone to some movies, too... but those are no farther than the stadium... and I know the safer ways to them.
The grocery store is less than a half-mile from my house.
I've had my car back for less than a week. That means, really, I've been off the road for most of two weeks.
Me.
Not driving.
For most of two weeks.
That is unheard of. Everyone knows what a social butterfly I am, attending diverse events all over town, spreading the love and the joy.
Of late, that has only happened if someone has fetched me to the event.
After the drive to Tybee on Friday, I cancelled my attendance at Angela's birthday party. It was to be held at Tybee, all day on Saturday.
I simply was not up for the drive and the weekend traffic and trying to finding parking and... I was not up for it.
Her daughter's birthday is later this month, so I will be sure to be there. It's in town, even though it will be southside, at Olive Garden.
That's near the school.
By the end of the month, I'll have plenty of practice driving out that far.
I'll have to do so. Now that school has begun, I have a responsibility to thirty paying clients to be the one in charge, two nights a week.
The invisible trees will just have to take a break.

waiting for the monster to strike again
I finally have my car back again.
I picked it up yesterday morning, after the clutch master cylinder had been replaced to make it drivable.
The trunk is lashed down, as it can no longer close properly.
And I find myself waiting for the Monster SUV to strike again, to attack me from out of the blue.
I've driven my car only twice since I got it back.
Yesterday, I drove from Dixie Motors to my house. My first niece then ferried me around for our movie and slunch date. She even took me with her to pick up the Papa Murphy's pizza specials from Wednesday night's game.
My car then sat in the driveway until this afternoon.
I drove out to Tybee Vacation Rentals to inquire about a job, on her advice. The folks behind the counter were rather unpleasant to me, but that was not why I started crying.
The drive out to Tybee had been so stressful.
I didn't have any huge beasts crowding my tailpipe - for a change - but I kept watching in the rearview mirror, just in case.
All the way there.
Then I kept close watch again, all the way home.
I've cried twice since I got home two hours ago.
I know it's stress.
I know it's the bad kind of stress that just immobilizes me.
I should have gone to wash clothes.
I should have gone to the post office.
I should have gone to the bank.
I stayed here, feeling trapped.
Tonight, I will go to the baseball game.
That is close enough to home that the distance is minimal.
But I will most likely come straight home after the game.
And I will be watching for the white SUV ...

breakin' the law, breakin' the law
Bet you didn't know, as you're cruising around town in your automobile with no particular place to go, that you are most likely driving illegally.
That means you're breaking the law.
I have to admit, that's been heavy on my mind. The Judas Priest song is running in my head right now.
Obviously.
So, just what are these commonly broken laws of driving? Are you guilty of (ab)using your car as the ton of death machine that it is, like the bad person that struck me?
Are you wanting to be a better driver?
I do.
I hope you do.
I would prefer living in a world where folks try to better themselves.
In the interest of all, here are the ten laws I recently read.
Don't let the highway patrol catch you at fault.
1. It's illegal to text in a car, even if the car is stopped.
Yes, sunshine, even if traffic is stopped for a red light, YOU are not supposed to pull out your phone to catch up on your text messages. You should either pull into a parking lot and stop the car, or call the texter back. (However, if you are not yet 18 years old, you cannot legally use a phone FOR ANY REASON behind the wheel of a car.)
I had been guilty of this, but no more.
2. Neither the driver nor any passenger can have an open alcoholic beverage.
Honestly, I cannot imagine why anyone would think that was legal. I know there are plenty of boneheads behind the wheel of a car, but who doesn't know this law?
I cannot tell you how many times I have made my middle brother finish his beer before getting into my car. He always wants to act like it's a major imposition, too, but there is no way I am breaking the law for him and his alcoholism.
3. You cannot legally drive while wearing headphones in both ears.
Most folks think driving barefoot is illegal, but that has never been illegal here in Georgia.
(I know - that surprised me, too.)
However, if you wear headphones, make sure you only cover one ear. Otherwise, how are you going to hear emergency vehicles?
This law is straight-out common sense, y'all, and no one has an excuse to break it.
4. You must move over one lane not just for police cars, but also for assistance vehicles and garbage trucks.
Yes, indeed, called the "Move-Over Law", YOU need to pull over one lane away for blue lights AND amber lights.
If traffic will not allow you to do so, then you should proceed at least ten miles under the speed limit in your lane of travel.
I have made sure to obey this one.
What about you?
5. A bicycle classifies as a vehicle.
If it has wheels and is on the road, it is a vehicle. Period. That means that a cyclist that opts to ride on the sidewalk is doing so illegally. A cyclist that rides through an intersection by using the pedestrian walkway is doing so illegally.
I have several friends that choose to ride their bikes when they go out drinking. If YOU do that, you are guilty of Driving While Intoxicated and you can expect to go to jail.
6. Headlights must be turned on when driving in rain.
Almost all cars on the road have the daytime running lights, so folks think they're covered for this law.
Not so.
YOU need to turn on your headlights in order to have your tail lights illuminated. Running lights only alert drivers coming toward you or those you are following. But what about all of those drivers behind you and to the side?
Just do it, folks, just do it.
7. If the traffic lights are not working at an intersection, all drivers must regard it as a four-way stop.
Yeah, I can't tell you how often this one is broken, especially by those in large vehicles, like SUV's and pick-up trucks and vans.
Next time, YOU should obey the law.
I'll be taking photos of those who don't.
Seriously.
8. It's illegal to have any part of your tag obstructed from view.
I don't really know how to work this one. Ever since the hit-and-run driver slammed into my car and rearranged my trunk, my trunk lid cannot reach the latch. I have a bungee cord arranged to keep the trunk lid down, taking great care to not block much of my tag. But still... I am only too aware that blue lights may one day pull me over. Maybe I should carry a copy of the police report in my car.
That's a good idea, don't you think?
9. It's illegal to use the center lane to merge into traffic.
I bet YOU didn't know that, did you?
Honestly, I did not either.
That center lane is ONLY for turning left. Even then, you are not to enter the center lane until you are 300 feet from where you will turn left.
300 feet = 100 yards, sports fans.
So, if you enter the center lane more than a football field from your turning goal, you are breaking the law.
I'll keep that in mind... please do the same.
10. It is illegal to stay in the left lane if a faster vehicle needs to use it.
I think of this as the "Autobahn rule", but here is how it actually works.
If YOU are driving the speed limit and traveling in the left lane, you can be pulled over if a faster car is unable to use that passing lane.
Now, then, if your are using the lane for passing, you are expected to vacate and return to the right lane after completing your pass. If not, you can be given a ticket for breaking this new "Slowpoke Law".
Alright, consider yourselves educated and warned.

moving along, at last
Dear Tony,
Life is truly getting better. The damage assessor came on Saturday morning. She had called, as I had asked, before coming so I could be there. Rather than totaling out the car (which is only estimated to be worth about $900), she figured up what it would cost for repairs. I ended up with a check for almost $1500, instead of $600. (There's a $250 deductible for uninsured motorist, which hit-and-run accidents fall under.) What a generous break for me!
I received the police report on Thursday, delivered personally by the officer who wrote it. What a relief! That started things going in the right direction, finally. My insurance company immediately arranged for the assessor to visit, as well as setting up a free rental car. Monday, I picked up the rental car, so I had wheels to go to the grocery store. I haven't driven it much - it has too many blind spots for me. At least I know the 2015 Hyundai Elantra is not the car for me.
I hope to have my car back tomorrow or at least by Friday. The clutch threw a rod, so a new master cylinder had to be ordered. How much for the repair? Looks like < $400!!! Wow! I'm not worried about the trunk - I'll just rig it to stay closed.
The clutch repair is being done by Dixie Motors, referred by my next-door neighbor. He works with a lot of insurance companies and knows where to go for any kind of repairs.
Hooray! What a relief to not be forced into car shopping!
Now, I think I'll look for a part-time job to go along with teaching. I'm hoping I can work at a used furniture store with some of my Lunch Ladies. Please do say a few extra prayers for me... I'm still stressed, but much better.
with much love

blessed with good fortune
Dear Tony,
My apologies for not writing sooner.
First, I am physically okay. When the hit-and-run driver rammed into the back of my car on Monday, as I drove into town, music saved me.
How? The traffic lanes on E-516, all three lanes, were stopped for the Montgomery Street light. I was relaxed, enjoying a song on the radio.
I had no idea the white SUV was roaring up behind me until it struck and my trunk flew open.
It's been a circus of monkeys ever since, dealing with the police about my missing police report, dealing with the insurance company, being without a car.
But... here's the important part... my friends have rallied around me, making sure I miss out on nothing.
I am so blessed.
with much love!

NEVER disengage from a 911 call until help arrives
I have been in tears for most of the day.
One person after another has had bad news for me, all day long. One after another, the people I called upon for aid, the people in charge, had no help for me.
The Police Reports division had told me this morning they had no record of the report being filed by Officer Powell. Several calls later, Sargeant Cleveland Lovett had determined that the report had, indeed, been filed on Monday evening, just as Officer Powell had said he would do. However, though filed, the report had been lost within the software program ("GEARS world", as the Sargeant called it) they use for reporting. I was told that there is nothing more to be done until they can speak with the software representative in the morning, a person who will hopefully be able to retrieve the report, a person who has had to do this several times for the police department.
That means my insurance company can do nothing for me at this time. Until GEICO has the Police Report, they cannot arrange for an appraiser, for a rental car, for nothing to help me.
The call about the 911 operator not dispatching help to me? Well, it took two hours to be resolved. And when the resolution did finally arrive, it was in the form of an accusation of my actions. That's what I was told by Judy Miller, the one in charge of complaints about 911 operators.
I posted her advice on facebook, to enlighten the world.
To one and all: NEVER disengage from a 911 call until help has arrived.
Got that?
It was MY FAULT for trusting that help was on the way.
So, NEVER let that happen to you.
Thank God I wasn't having a heart attack.
The rallying round of my friends and family has been reassuring.
I'm even going to dinner and to see "The Phantom Lady" at the Sentient Bean tonight, courtesy of my dear friend the librarian.
That doesn't mean I'm over all of the hurt bestowed upon me today by people who are supposed to have my best interests in mind.
The police department.
The 911 system.
The insurance company.
I may consciously admit that they are doing what they can, but my heart and psyche are bruised and broken.
Responses from those who know and love me have helped.
I'm including them in the body of this post, instead of as comments afterward.
I need them right here.
The bfe will know what that means.

hit and run
Honestly, the song that comes to mind, in between the tears, is this one by Def Leppard.
Here's what I posted on facebook just moments ago.
"To the white, brunette female in the white SUV that slammed into the back of my car on E-516 yesterday, just before the Montgomery Street light, and then DROVE AWAY: Officer Powell informed me that the police have traffic cameras at that "reduce speed" caution light. YOU WILL BE FOUND AND PROSECUTED FOR BEING A HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER.
Meanwhile, if anyone knows someone who witnessed the accident, about 1:30 PM yesterday (Monday, August 3), please contact me or the police dept and ask for Officer Powell. The road was full of people and we were all stopped for the light when the reckless driver hit me."
Honestly, I am still in shock.
My poor, disabled car is sitting, crippled, in my driveway.
I had it towed here, to my home, rather than to a service center.
I know I wasn't thinking clearly. I was almost home from the weekend trip to the wedding in Tennessee, the visit in Summerville, and the birthday of my great-niece.
I was almost home.
I am so glad I had stopped for an early lunch, to have an iced tea and use a bathroom. I almost had forgone that side trip. After all, it's only about two hours from Louisville to Savannah. I should have made it with no problem, even with the sporadic rain showers.
However, considering that I sat in the heat, in the left-hand pull-out on ever-busy Lynes Parkway for more than forty minutes, waiting, waiting, waiting for help to arrive... taking that early lunch break was a blessing.
Another blessing is that I was not seriously injured.
Sure, when the stray police officer riding westbound pulled over to see what was going on, and I found out that the 911 dispatcher had botched the call, I lost it and started hyperventilating. He must have seen in my eyes that I thought I was going to die. He immediately changed his call with the dispatcher from Code 5 to Code 8 (or something like that) and an EMS crew and police officer arrived within minutes. The EMS duo found my blood pressure was crazy high (180 over 110); after they had me sit in their cool van for a few minutes, those numbers had both dropped 20 points. They had me sign off that I did not want to go to the hospital.
Of course I didn't want to go to the hospital. All of my important possessions were now in a car with a busted trunk. I wanted to go home, to try to feel safe again.
And I wasn't in any pain.
Here are the responses from those who know and love me.
These are posted right here, not afterward as comments, because I need for them to be part of this post.
Please bear with me.
Jim Casey Are you ok? Somehow I feel certain you have a sore neck and stiff back.
August 4 at 10:34am
Faustina Smith I do not as of yet. I was very relaxed, just enjoying the tune on the radio, and I think that probably saved me. I had no idea she was screaming up behind me until she actually hit my car.
August 4 at 10:40am
Lorretta Ruggiero Hope they get her!
August 4 at 10:36am
Kristin Stout Oh my! I hope you are alright!
August 4 at 10:40am
Faustina Smith I think I may be alright. I was very relaxed at the time of the collision, so that helped. My trunk was shifted inward by 3 inches and the clutch came disengaged. I hope she has blue paint all over the front of her vehicle. I hope she goes to jail.
August 4 at 10:42am
Faustina Smith The scariest part was when the police officer came by, on his way to elsewhere, and I found out the 911 dispatcher had not sent assistance to me. I started crying hard and hyperventilating - very scary. EMS checked me out and, except for elevated b.p. and pulse, I was okay.
August 4 at 10:47am
Faustina Smith I had already been waiting 40 minutes.

Faustina Smith So far, I seem to be okay. Usual aches and pains from being on this planet for more than five decades. I'm glad I had no idea it was going to happen until it did. My feelings are hurt more than anything else, by her dastardly behavior, by the neglect of the 911 operator. And by the disabling of my car. I was returning from a wedding in TN and had all kinds of plans. As always, right?

Jo Coleman And in addition to the physical.... There is the disappointment that people don't treat us the way we treat them. Karma will get her
