New York City?!?!

Where else would you host an episode of Sunday Morning Live???

Starring Reverend Billy Hester, straight from the Marble Collegiate Church, located downtown near the Empire State Building!

With special musical guest the Asbury Memorial Choir!

Streamed directly to the Asbury Memorial Church at the corner of Waters Avenue and Henry Street in downtown Savannah, Georgia!!!

Featuring opening and closing remarks by Reverend August Alderman!

And welcoming back to the podium to perform the opening prayer, let's hear it for Reverend Bob Townsend!

He's had health problems for a year that have kept him from that duty.

As he said, "This has been a rough year, but I'm not dead yet!"

You and me both, Bob, you and me both!!!

Yes, indeed, this was certainly a show that we got today!

However, Billy's sermon was the briefest ever, running about ten minutes.

That meant that we all took a vote in Holliday Hall for that to be their length from this point forward - hahahaha!

What was going on there?

The 4th Annual Men's Bake-Off, that's what!

I almost missed the whole thing, as I'd waited in line for a hug from August after SML was done.

Going clockwise from that lone dark one, I have 'Into The Woods', 'Peaches and Cream', 'Refrigerator Cake', and 'Pineapple Layer'.

As sweet as they were, I'm glad I just had shreds of them!

I sat with Sherry Giddens, who just had to tell the other two ladies about my 25-year-old Saturn.

I didn't mind the ribbing, though.

My car has been in a movie, and something I did in that Netflix film got enacted by Emily Blunt, so we both have bragging rights!

As I told them, my car shared screen time with that actress for a full count, just to be sure it was on purpose and not accidental.

What a great memory!!!

I didn't mention that my car's twin also had screen time, in one of my favorite television shows.

What a great surprise that had been for me!

I do hope Sherry and the other two will look up "Pain Hustlers"!

Meanwhile, off I go to the AMC 11.

I'm treating myself to a Nicholas Galitzine double header!!!

Woohoo!!!

First up will be yet another screening of "The Sheep Detectives", in which his age is early 20's.

Then, I'm catching him as the mid-20-something He-Man, in all his muscles and manly glory!!!

Yes, that should be a mighty fine time for me!

Later, y'all!

wednesday, wednesday, such a busy day!

First order of business: go to the Georgia Skin & Cancer Clinic to meet Taylor Byrne, my new dermatologist.

What odd things they had on the walls!

She did a full body scan and found five moles - FIVE! - that looked suspicious.

She took scrapings and was done, for now.

I had some time before the movie started.

Off I went to the Southwest Chatham Public Library to get my early voting done!

I was actually shocked at how many items were on the Democratic ballot.

Based on the flyers in the mail and the ads on TV, it was easy to think only six seats were up for grabs.

Even so, I made the best choices for me and moved on and out of there!

Next up was a visit to Auto Zone.

I'd made five visits, buying at least $20 worth of goods each time, and now I would get my reward: $20 of free goods!!!

In honor of my car's upcoming 25th birthday on the 16th, I got two quarts of oil for her.

My thirsty Saturn will be drinking in style!

Her oil lines weren't the only ones getting a treat on this outing.

Her gas tank received $25 of gasoline, all free to me!

I used that gift card from the AARP luncheon, so the 'free' gas was a bday68 gift for me and a bday25 gift for my car.

That wasn't the only gift from AARP, either!

My game-playing reward points netted me a 5-buck gift card.

That granted me an almost-free Cameo special at AMC today!

Paired with my A*List membership, this matinee and snack cost me $2.

I would have gladly paid more for this Hugh Jackman caper!

Oh, yes, i intend to see "The Sheep Detectives" multiple times!!!

I do!

It was like stepping back in time to the Disney Sunday night movies of my youth, with a lovely bunch of English folk running the mystery!

Then I dined early at Texas Roadhouse, courtesy of that fundraiser last month, as well as the Christmas gift card from Tony and Laura.

I used the gala's "free appetizer" coupon to buy Tater Skins, of course.

Those will be a great breakfast for the rest of this week...

then I tried the Chicken Alfredo Penne, as something different.

Different it certainly was!

I'm not saying it was bad... as I took half of it home for another meal... but it needed garlic to make it sing.

How about that!

I made a pun using the focus of that gala!

What a wonderful Wednesday!

today, i went for a drive

I'm not saying I drove down to Hinesville or anything.
It was after my brother, Smitty, had taken me to my post-op appointment with Dr. Whipple and we were back at my house.

He could see that my car was covered in oak tree fronds.
The three hours of steady rain on Sunday had knocked them loose from the tree and all over any surface.
"You want me to stay while you see if your car will start?"
Good idea.
In fact, I told him I would take a little drive, let my Saturn cruise...
and that's what I did.
I went straight to Truman Parkway South and let her run.
It wasn't yet 11 AM and both sides of the parkway were almost deserted.
That was good for my first venture out.
When the exit for White Bluff Road came up, I took it, then circled back on the ramp to hit Truman Parkway North.
By 11:15 AM, I was back to my driveway.
Hallelujah!
I definitely felt a sense of accomplishment with that foray into the world!
I thought, very briefly, of going to a movie.
After all, I haven't been to a cinema since World Theatre Day.
However, I haven't felt deprived in the least.
Between the free movies on Up Faith & Family last week, interspersed with my own reward movies and those on Peacock, I've had plenty to watch.
"Romantic Friction" - a book cover artist gets to play author when the real writer of a fluff romance wants to hide from the limelight; lightweight and funny.
"Starstruck: Gene Kelly's Love Letter To Ballet": not a word is spoken or sung, but there is no doubt about the plot; beautiful and captivating!!!
"My Boss' Wedding" - over-organized assistant is pegged with the groom's loosey-goosey nephew to plan an over-the-top gala in a week... from gown to flowers to food to venue to rehearsal dinner; definitely fun, with a little twist.
"First Dog" - when the pet of the POTUS gets lost and turns up in California, it's up to a foster boy to "do the right thing" and return him; I really liked this one, with all the Dolly Parton music and Eric Roberts as the President with a heart.
"Forgiveness Girl" - follows the childhood of a girl with spina bifida as she seeks friendship with a new girl; gets a bit too intense when the girl tries to kill herself.
"This Little Love Of Mine" - woman returns to her childhood town to convince her childhood friend to take over his family's business; yes, definitely liked this one, with its setting in a tropical cove!
"We're The Millers" - the Thursday reward movie from Comcast had a ragtag instant 'family' on an RV trip to Mexico to smuggle drugs; had some moments of mirth, Jennifer Aniston as a stripper, but a decent ending.
"Five Date Rule" - a widower and a birthday spur two people to the same internet dating site by their family and friends; another good one I'd see again!
"The Other Woman" - an older Cameron Diaz finds the man she's been dating is married and drops him, but his wife insists on being her friend; a bit wacky, but that's to be expected with this cast!
"Airplane!" - I watched this oldie from 1980 just for laughs!
That last one was seen last night, ending my Post Hernia Repair Film Festival right before the post-op meeting with the doctor.
Now, I'm going to watch some TV as I enjoy my dinner.
This is courtesy of Smitty and Mary's Easter repast: brown-sugar ham, green beans, and sweet potato casserole.
I'm watching an episode of "Father Brown" in which he introduces Sister Boniface as "The Forensic Nun".
I enjoy both of those British murder-mystery shows, so it'll be nice to see how the one spun off from the other.
Then, it'll be watching a recorded episode of "Two And A Half Men".
I've discovered I need that show to signal my body that it's time for bed.
If that's what I need, that's what I'll have.
Loss adjustment takes many forms.

this is how we do it...

We had another emergency meeting at the Two First Posts site, but this time it wasn't just us chickens.

There were five members from Post 500 of the American Legion, our brothers in this venture, as well as five from Post 36.

We had all lost our physical meeting spaces three years ago.

Plus, we had a guest, Savanna Newsome of the construction folks, sitting in to offer any help.

So, what was the rush for this 5 PM meeting?

The USO wants to rent out the ballroom for a Christmas-themed event for about 100 children and Santa.

We don't even have a building manager yet or any staff!

That's why we'll be meeting again for the next two weeks to at least fill that managerial position with a temporary person.

I'm glad I was there - right place, right time, as per my odometer!

That mileage of 244111 was when I was home from the meeting.

I don't know just what the pattern means, but I like it!

I'd finished up my AMC A*List just before I went to Montgomery Street.

I'd watched "Predator: Badlands" again on Monday, as I'd wanted a laugh.

I even mentioned that to Paul, when I called him for his birthday58.

He had found that to be an odd choice for me until I explained about the poor lonely pants!

"Eternity", though, is brand-new one and poses an interesting question.

Set in the hereafter, it asked: do you choose life everlasting with the one that got away or with the one you had for several decades?

I'm talking about husbands, with all parties dead at this point.

She had to make a choice between the first one, who died in the Korean War, and the second one, with whom she had 65 years, children, and grandchildren.

I thought it odd that they were all young, like in their twenties.

Only the first husband would have died at that age.

When I left the cinema, I'd stopped over at the southside AutoZone.

When I'd replaced the windshield wiper on the driver's side a year ago, I'd made the choice to leave the other in place.

Well, the one on the other side has been shredded - and not in a good way - for several months.

Lots of rain is in the forecast and my passenger-side needed help.

Plus, I'm tired of hearing that shredded piece flapping on the windshield.

I'm thinking I'll go ahead and replace the driver's side, too, as it's starting to show a bit of wear.

Meanwhile, it's time for "Georgie & Mandy" and dinner!

It's been a drizzly day, overcast and gray, so comfort food, please!

That means Mama's salmon stew, amended to Tina's tuna chowder, served in my Donburi bowl from Okinawa.

So glad I had the oyster crackers on hand, too!

six movies this time, with five for a*list!

... not that anyone could tell from the AMC results.
I'm accustomed to the A*List not being correct, but usually the listing of tickets is a true representation of what happened for me at the cinema.
Nope, not this week!
In fact, the A*List does correctly show the movies I watched as part of my movie-lover's monthly package, though two of the films are grouped together.
Also, it may seem that they have erroneously listed two movies as the same when they should be different, but that is correct as shown.
What is not correct is the doubling of the movie set in Hawaii in the sixpack of movie tickets that are given.
That may have happened when the manager changed the movie time.
I'd bought the ticket for the 4:55 PM show, but then it was shifted to 5:15 PM, and I think perhaps my ticket was "replaced" by the one with the new time, though I only watched the movie once.
Of course, that's "Lilo & Stitch" I'm talking about.
See, I wanted to use my AMC e-gift card to have pizza -
you know, so I could eat pizza with Lilo and Nani in a scene in the movie -
a scene I know from my familiarity with this little monster story -
and the only way I know to pre-order food is to also pre-order the movie.
Got it?
I knew I wanted this movie to accompany my second viewing of "Stitch Head", so then I would have a grand theme for my first Tina Tuesday of November.
Both have the word "Stitch" in their titles - check!
Both have monsters/aliens in them that scare "normal" people, but then charm them - check!
Both have singing and dancing - check!
Both have dogs - check!
Both have animation and both came out this year - check!
That made them as perfect as a pair could be.
Then I thought to see another pair of movies that AMC was offering as a single A*List selection...
two that were both psychological thrillers...
two that were both foreign-made...
and so I took them up on that offer!
"Vincent Must Die" came out in 2023 and was very well made, even if the title is a bit misleading.
It isn't just 'Vincent' who gets attacked when he catches the eyes of some strangers, but also people like him who call themselves 'Sentinels' and try to steer clear of society.
But is the viciousness transmittable to others?
That gave it a science-fiction flair that I truly enjoyed!
The other film in the 2-for-1 package was "Hallow Road", which starred Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys was parents called to come to the rescue of their teen daughter when she calls in the wee hours.
The problem is, the girl claims to have run over another girl in the woods.
But, did she?
It was a parent's worst nightmare, with quite a twist at the end.
Good science fiction!!!
That made a total of four movies on Tina Tuesday - wow!
As for that first "Stitch Head", that was seen on Halloween.
And I was supposed to see the 40th anniversary showing of "Back To The Future" this afternoon with Carolyn, but she was sick.
I'd already reserved the ticket online so I went...
but the little plastic grommet that held the two pieces of my new shift cable together chose to disintegrate shortly after I got off Truman Parkway...
leaving my car in second gear...
so I'd managed to coax my Saturn to Rincon Transmission on Mall...
as I knew they did not close until 5 PM...
where they had immediately verified the problem and rectified it by judicious use of a little metal circlet to rejoin the shifter cable pieces...
and I'd chosen to go home rather than to a movie I was an hour late for.
Good choice.
i thank You, God.

to misquote austin powers...

... I got my baby back, baby back!!!

 Oh, yeah!!

Michelle at Rincon Transmission called about an hour after Smitty came by.

He'd brought me leftovers from the low country boil they had for Tyler and Theo.

I'm so happy my sis-in-law doesn't like leftovers!!!

Anyway, I called my brother to see if he was still fairly close... he was!

So he came for me and took me to retrieve my pretty little Saturn.

Oh, I do so miss her little fish-face when she's gone!!!

And what was the first thing I did?

I went to a movie, having checked the schedules while waiting for Smitty.

And what did I find?

The Universe had set me up to see "The Addams Family" after all!!!

That completed the last of the Fall Family Five-Film Festival at NCG Cinema.

I has thought I was going to miss 'Casper', but it was held over for its 30th Anniversary, so I was able to see it with family last Friday.

That's when this movie started its 3-day run, meaning it should have been gone after yesterday... but there it was, screening at 4 PM today!

Hallelujah!!!

i thank You, God!

And now, I'm off to Music Bingo, having been summoned by Elissa, who was even going to come for me if I needed a ride still.

So glad to have my baby back!

off on a sleepover!

Not me, silly one.

That would be my little Saturn.

We were supposed to go to Pooler today.

Instead, she disengaged the gear shift as soon as we hit the street.

I had to push her to the curb to keep from blocking passage.

Fortunately, I was at home and had computer access.

Danny Beam lightened my mood with this theatre reference on fb.

"I just wish my life had background music so I could at least know if I'm in a drama, a comedy, or a horror show."

That meme was credited to a guitarist from 1823.

Such a sweet, sad, face.

There aslant from the curb my Saturn remained for three hours.

Field Maintenance Company answered the call from Allstate right away, but it was a busy day for them.

The young man was just as nice as could be, though, even giving me a lift.

I was a bit dejected by that time, missing Barbara, as she and I helped each other with car issues.

That's why this fb post from Andy Pena resonated with me.

"Therapist: So how depressed would you say you've been feeling lately?

Patient: I don't car anymore if my foot hands over the bed where a monster can get it."

I totally understood.

Now, my dear Saturn is spending the night at Rincon Transmission, chosen in part because they are a member of the Better Business Bureau.

That organization has a lot of credibility with me.

Michelle, a kind-hearted soul at the front desk, assured me that they would take good care of her.

I had such plans for today, ending with the free fall concert by the SAA orchestra.

After Tony picked me up and brought me home, I had a good cry, intending to follow these words from Hallie Allgood.

"Latibulate" - a 17th century verb meaning to hide oneself in a corner to escape reality or until the situation improves.

An old-fashioned pity party certainly seemed to be in order.

Instead, I called great-niece Chloe and sang "Happy Birthday" to her and we talked a while before her soccer practice.

She's such a sweet 7-year-old now!

Then I called stepmom Bonnie and sang "Happy Birthday" to her.

She and Chloe both had their special days yesterday, and neither one minded one whit that I had extended their celebrations.

Bonnie and I talked on the phone for over an hour!!!

Trust me, neither of us spend that much time on the phone on a regular basis, so this had been a special treat for both of us!

And now?

Now I feel much better, having spoken with my favorite 7-year-old and my favorite 77-year-old.

I'll watch a bit of "Elsbeth" in a while, and that will brighten my spirits, too - such a gypsy she is with her almost garishly-hued clothes and totes!

i thank You, God, for choices.

dragon of juneteenth

"Wait, let me guess! Okay, today is June 19th, so I take it that you're marking that date in US history from exactly 160 years ago. So far, so good?"

Most exactly!

"Alrighty then! And that other part of the title refers to the movie you saw today with Michael and the twins!"

Oh, so close, but nope! Yes, I was supposed to see "How To Train Your Dragon" in Big-D with them today, courtesy of the two free reward tickets from Comcast. Alas, that didn't happen. Sure, it still showed up on my A*List that I went to that dance, but I missed it. AMC even gave me Bonus Reward points for those tickets from the Fandango site.

"Well, that's a good thing, but I'm confused. Why didn't you go to the movie with them?"

My little Saturn wouldn't start. Not even a click when I turned the key. Not even a click when Kevin Sullivan - my neighbor - attached his jump box. Not even a click when I popped the clutch to start it while rolling down the driveway to the street. Nothing.

"Oh, honey, I am so sorry to hear that."

Yeah, me, too. I did have a nice chat with that young man from Minnesota who drove the tow truck. No charge to me, as AllState covered the fee from Field Maintenance Company. I had my girl towed to Firestone of Skidaway, of course. They weren't able to do the repair, but Patricia didn't charge me and Aaron disconnected the wires to the running lights. It wasn't that those lights were the culprit for draining the battery. Nope. The problem is with the multi-function switch. I've been referred to the electrical folks at Dixie Motors and The Car Doctor for the actual repair, if and when the part can actually be located. They told me, though, that it isn't just older cars that have parts that are hard to find these days.

"You didn't notice any problems with the car before this morning?"

Well, last night, when I returned from dinner, I couldn't get the headlights to turn off. You're gonna laugh about this. I had taken the key out of the ignition before I noticed that there was still light in front of the car. I even waited a moment to see if they would turn off! Hahaha! But they didn't. Even with the light switch off and the key out of the car. So I put the key back in and cranked the car... no problem. I turned on the lights and then turned them off with the switch, then turned off the car and removed the key. That seemed to have worked, so I just passed it off as 'one of those weird things'. You know? Intermittent problems were always the worst to solve when I was a CTM in the Navy. The guy at Firestone, though, assured me that this is not intermittent. It's here to stay and the multifunction switch needs to be replaced.

"I see. But let me get this right. You weren't charged anything today? Not for the tow or the hour-long diagnostic and labor at the car place?"

That's correct. Christina suggested it might have been because I recently had new tires put on her car. I really don't know.

"Oh, you've talked to her? Like, heard her voice?"

Yes, I called her to see how things were going between her and Michael. She told me on Monday that he was mad at her, but she didn't know why. Apparently, they worked things out - she was at his house this afternoon, making dinner together!

"That's wonderful! She had been so worried about him. He had texted her to say for her to 'leave him alone, no more dinners at his place, she had lied to him and he had almost gone to jail about it'."

Yes, very odd, and apparently all over now. In fact, she knew he and the girls were to see the dragon movie with me and he'd even invited her to come along! I do wish she had sent me a text that all was well with them. Oh, well, it is what it is.

"Yes, it is. Naught for you to do 'bout that. She has a lot of people to try to placate - him, Kaleigh, Heather, Chelsea, her mom, you, and now Anthony, too - and she's doing the best she can. So, let it go. Why don't you tell me about your trio of dances this week?"

It's not a trio, but a quartet now for my AMC A*List, remember? AMC can't seem to keep them in the proper order, though, so I must be twirling from one genre to another too quickly for them! First was "The Materialists", which looked like a romcom in the previews, but certainly was not. Pedro Pascal was just so misused in that "business of love" piece. Next was the one on Monday with Christina.

"So, a drama, then a horror flick. Gotcha."

On Tuesday, after mowing part of the front yard, bagging the cuttings this time instead of leaving them for mulch, I needed to cool off, so to the cinema I went.

"You must have your time line confused. You went to the theater in the morning."

Nope. That wasn't to the AMC, but to the NCG. I wasn't able to mow until the day had cooled down, so I had to wait until almost 8 PM to break out the Ryobi. That meant going to the 9:30 PM screening of "Karate Kid: Legends". Very nice movie it was! I always like Jackie Chan, but I always think he looks more than 4 years older than me. I guess 71 would look older on anyone who's been as rode hard as he's been! Ralph Macchio is looking older, too, which is to be expected. He's right between Smitty and Ronnie in age.

"Everyone gets older, that's what they do. Get older or die, those are the options. But, yeah, I know the mental images are forever one age."

Right, until you see them again in the present. That's life!

"So it is! So, for your quartet, you had drama, horror, sports theme, and fantasy scifi. Did I get that line-up straight?"

Yes, you did, and you three in a little pun, too! Thanks for that!

"Any time, dearie! I know how much you love those!"

lookin' at my Gucci it's about that time

Dearest Mama,
I think the time has come to release the car.
Wait, let me be more specific. It's time to release the 2nd car your death helped me to buy. True, that first one, the Elantra from the auction yard, wasn't in my possession for very long before it went away. What a terrible decision that purchase had been! But, in my defense, you had only recently died and I truly was not sane.
Not saying I am now sane, but I'm a lot closer to that state. Mostly. Especially if you disregard my writing letters to dead people. (smile)
No blame towards my husband; bless his heart, he was trying to go along with anything I wanted, anything, if it would only make me less sad. And at the time, I wanted that green car.
So, I'm not talking about that vehicle, bought to replace my 18-year-old Subaru which I had driven for thirteen years at the time. Hmmm...that means I drove that Subaru through its terrible teens! Maybe that's why it told me one day, "Get OUT! We're DONE!" The car was all grown-up and wanted me to set it free!
Nah, I don't think that was it. The reason I had to release the Subaru was the screwdriver-in-the-carburetor trick simply wasn't working anymore and no one around this neck of the woods seemed to know how to successfully repair Surefoot's carburetor.
Anywho. On the 16th of May of 2001, Jeff and I had both been forced to buy replacement cars for our aging, no longer working models. There we were, at the Saturn dealership, chosen for four reasons. First: his mom, as a retired GM employee, could get us a discount on new vehicles. Very good! Second: Saturn had great pricing going on, with 0.9% as the finance rate. Definitely a plus! Third: we had decided to buy American-made vehicles. Saturn was made right around the corner, practically, in Tennessee. So, that was good, our money would be directly benefiting other citizens of the USA. Fourth, and not necessarily last in our considerations, Jeff knew the man in charge there, Virgil, and had high regard for him and the product. Fine by me.
And it was a very good car-buying experience! I told them I wanted a stick-shift sedan, with roll-down windows and keyed locks. I had expected them to not have any such vehicle in this world of automatics and power-everthing... but they did! And it was this gorgeous "Blue Metallic" color! Excellent!
Jeff came within the hour and found the car of his dreams, the SC3 coupe with the sunroof and the trick door. And, wonder of wonders, it, too, was Blue Metallic and manual transmission! We hadn't planned to having matching cars, but now we did, at least in color. Cool beans! Our very first new cars, ever, and they were the same color!
As you know, that was very short-lived. We drove off the lot around 10 PM on a Wednesday night; by 9 AM on Friday morning, his car was totaled by a late-shift worker driving while sleeping. If Jeff had been driving his old car, with no airbags, he would have been dead. So, thank you to you and all of the angels for that good fortune. Jeff was able to walk away from the wreck with no injuries. What a miracle!
His second brand-new car was not blue, but was still an SC3, so that was all to the good. It had been a little odd to have two blue cars of the same hue.
That was then. Now, he no longer has that car and I've been considering getting a newer model ever since last August, when the gearshift lever had the broken bushing and wouldn't shift. When the physicist and I were returning from o-HI-o and ended up stranded in Macon, Georgia. Which, as it turned out, wasn't so bad since my nephew was able to take us in for the night and had an unexpectedly free Sunday morning (the flooring job had been postponed by the owner) to ferry us to the airport to rent a car. Hmmm. Maybe you and the angels helped arrange for him to be home that night and available the next day? I am, as always, ever so grateful.
Even then, the key was having difficulties with the ignition. Again. Sometimes, it turned easily; other times, not so much. You would have to hold your mouth just right. (smile)
I knew it was having problems, but I went up to Pennsylvania anyway. Melaness had waited all year for me to come and I had promised I would. So, I did, right after the 4th of July. Celebrating my independence, you know. (smile)
That was all fine and good! The car sat in the driveway for almost all of the four days I was there. Then, on the Tuesday, off I went to Virginia, to visit family and friends for a few days. Still, no real problems, but a bit more dicey to turn that key in the ignition. I made it to Historic Powhatan, near Williamsburg, and got checked in and unpacked. I even went to the grocery store that night without mishap.
Wednesday morning, I could not turn the car on. The key would not budge. At all.
Bummer.
Not to fret, though. Tuesday's drive, and the odd visit with the former Marine in Fredericksburg, had been a bit wearing on me, so it was nice to have been forced to take a day off. Amazingly, the resort even had activities I participated in (a Colonial dance party on the front lawn, followed by a live band by the pool) AND provided me with a half-priced dinner, in the form of happy-hour specials at the onsite bar and grill. A platter of chicken tenders, served with mayonnaise, and a platter of yummy, garlicky fries! Good!
The next morning, the key worked like a charm and off I went to the Mariners' Museum for several hours. "Abandon Ship!" was full of life-saving tips and sad tales. "The War of 1812," done in comic-relief style with pop culture references, informed and entertained. "Fragile Waters," with black-and-white documentation of waterways in the western United States, of the ocean, and in the New England states by Adams, Brooks, and Monnelly. What a fabulous way to spend time!
I then left for my visit with Cousin Michelle and her family and Auntie and Uncle in Yorktown. I had a wonderful time with the girls, playing "Mario" something on the wii, then catching up with the grown-ups. I even ate two slices of Domino's pizza - and three lactase pills! - and thoroughly enjoyed it! At the end of the evening, I got back in the car and, thankfully, the key turned with no problem. Yeah!
The next morning, exactly one week after my departure from Savannah, I was on the road for points south. I was careful to walk from my unit to registration to check out, not wanting to chance burning up too many starts with my key. Even when Australian Nuvi led me to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, I was careful to not turn the key all the way off, for fear of being stuck on the ferry.
When I was South of the Border, I stopped to feed the car, again not turning the key off. But I needed to feed me, too, and certainly could not leave my key in the ignition...right? Right. And I was almost stranded there... but the key finally turned and the engine sprang to life. Whew! I successfully, and safely, arrived home, unpacked the car, and headed to a local noodle place with the peace Guy for dinner. And we almost got stranded there. I couldn't turn the key. He reached over and it turned and home we went.
That was it, too. No more turning by that key. Certainly no more turning by the old key.
For a few days, that was fine. There was plenty to do around the house and the housemate has been very generous with taking me to the grocery store or out to karaoke.
Still, after a few days of waiting, waiting, waiting for the GM computer with the key codes to return online, I was starting to get antsy. My sense of independence was definitely threatened.
The GM man had suggested that the key code might be on the original paperwork from buying the car. Twelve years ago. Yeah, I should still have that - probably not! So, yesterday morning, after breakfast, I dug out the car files and started plowing through them. No sales invoice for the car, but I did find the huge sticker decals that had been on my car, as well as both of Jeff's cars. Incredible, right? So, I'm showing them to the peace Guy and talking about how these were the first new cars Jeff and I had ever had. He replies that's he's 49 and has never had a new car and I say I was 43 before I did...and immediately I started falling apart. I could feel the tidal wave of emotion slam into me and drag me under, but I made it to the safety of the shower before the sobs hit full force.
There's no way I could have explained to him that the reason I was able to get a new car was because you had died.
Those words were not possible for me.
He was preoccupied with party preparations, so I considered that as a break for me. I had managed to get out of the dining room without raining on his parade, so to speak. After the shower, I dressed and left the house, saying I was going to the park to sit on a swing. He was busy with brownies for a different party, so I again escaped without having to talk, allowing me to keep a tight rein on my emotional state.
I don't know why I thought the park would be deserted, as many kids as there are in this neighborhood. I didn't even see them at first, under the shelter of the picnic area. Then, the sprays of water at the basketball court caught my gaze and held it.
Water.
Not saltwater, but, still, water.
My path turned toward the gently arching streams, the water glistening in the sun, the drops singing as they hit the pavement. I almost ran to get into it, ditching my shoes and phone, but rushing, fully clad, into the cool water. Such release! Then, a Bob Marley tune started playing in my head and I found myself slowly dancing into and out of and through the continuous rain of fresh water.
I found myself beginning to feel much better. Maybe, indeed, "every little thing gonna be all right." This song was a gift to me - from you? Or, now that I think about it, perhaps from Daddy? The song would certainly be more likely to be one of his favorites.
I am blessed to have y'all as angels to look after my mental health.
I am.
But I'd rather have you still as flesh and blood mortals.
Sigh. Impossible things.
So. As I was saying, I found myself relaxing and the tightly coiled knots of emotion gave way to the gentle pressure of the song and the spray and the dance. And it was all mine for at least thirty minutes.
Incredible.
When a young mother and her children did come to the basketball court shower, I was ready to be sociable again. I pointed out to the children the tiny rainbows and glittering brightness of the drops as they fell. Magical! The little girl asked me to show her how to dance in the glimmer of falling water and I encouraged her to find her own steps, maybe to a song she knew. "Row, row, row your boat" came to mind and soon we were both twirling!
After an hour of water therapy, I took my cue to leave when they did. I went home and started mowing the back yard and the housemate went to work. A little later, the GM man called to say the website was still down, but recommended I call a locksmith that made house calls. So I did. And he came, he saw, he verified what I already knew: the ignition cylinder needed to be replaced. Again.
At least it had worked for seven years this time.
I put in a call to the GM man, leaving my request on his voice mail. Might they have the part in stock? If so, or if not, would he please call me in the morning and let me know?
Then I settled in to wait for the new day, as naught else could be done.
And, after a phone call to my first niece started me crying again, I started looking at cars online. The credit union has a low auto loan rate right now and a long list of cars to finance.
A very long list.
I narrowed it down to just sedans.
Still, a very long list. I spent hours wading through, looking at just those which had manual transmissions, just those available in blues and greens and oranges, just those which had trunks.
I narrowed it down to 22.
Today, the key turned and I picked up the in-stock part and the fabulously friendly locksmith got it installed and even made two keys for me. He even showed me what was wrong on the old cylinder.
Very nice.
But it may still be time to buy another car.
So, I'll keep the list handy for a while.
Now, I'm going for a ride.
with much love always!
