Monday, it was time for Music Bingo again!

This was the first time any of us had been since the debacle a month ago.

"Us" would be me, Sandy, Marcia, and Elissa.

Hey, we've been busy, vibrant, women, a'ight, with family from out of town, cruises, and what-not going on!

I remembered to bring my free appetizer reward that I won about six weeks ago, too.

Fortunately, Midtown Sports Grill has changed their menu yet again.

Potato Skins is a new entry, loaded with bacon and cheddar, and that made for a mighty fine "welcome back" dinner with my friends!

And just look at that first bingo game of the evening!!!

That "Dance Party Mix" yielded me the first "Bingo!" of the bar!

Russ was even surprised that I'd won without using the 'Free Space' - I'd managed to do it with five actual songs that had been played, straight down the "I" column!!!

Andrew, the new bartender, was glad to bring me a free lemonade as my "free drink" reward for the game!

How wonderful to have shared that those three hours with friends!

Then, today, my first niece came to share a favorite movie with me!

This was the last week of the NCG Summer Camp Film Festival and they've been screening "The Wild Robot" since Sunday.

We love that movie about parenting and kindness!!!

She stayed awake through the entire movie!!!

That's saying a lot, as she has sleep apnea and tends to take a nap if she sits in one place too long.

That wasn't the case two weeks ago when she joined me for "Sing", but that was okay... it let me munch some of her popcorn!

That time, she was early and bought our tickets and kids' packs; this time, she was running on her standard time, so I bought the tickets and snacks.

(smile!)

After, we popped over to the Chick-Fil-A on Victory for our luncheon.

So glad the lunch crowd had mostly passed by then!

She grabbed the last table and we had a leisurely two hours together...

just us, no children, no boyfriend...

letting us truly talk about issues with that latter item.

Here's hoping for the best resolution for that problem.

Oh, plus a really bright spot!

We had been talking about friends from the past and she mentioned one of her middle-school buddies and spoke of them spending nights together.

"So, you're friends still, on fb?"

No, they weren't... but she quickly found her on that social media... and they are now reunited again!

Maybe I should do a few searches of lost friends, too.

wednesday luncheon with a chemist!

With all the 4th of July festivities, I made sure to send texts of fireworks to those dear to me.

Yvonne had replied, "I need to see your smiling face!"

I'd countered with, "luncheon on Wednesday?"

And here we were, in the middle of the week, together again!

 

I suggested Sunny Side Up, on DeRenne, and guess what?

She'd never been there!!!

Everyone at Armstrong seems to only know about two local breakfast places in Savannah, it seems - the Original Pancake House first, then Clary's on Habersham downtown second.

I'm glad to have broadened her horizons!

We both opted for breakfast for this luncheon, too.

I had the eggs, bacon, grits, and toast, like a Southern belle, while she chose buttery blueberry and pecan pancakes!

So delicious...

and perfect for a leisurely meal of catching up with our busy lives as retired women!

We gotta do this more often!!!

summer picnic luncheon on the beach!

"That doesn't look like any beach to me, g'friend. In fact, it looks just like Holliday Hall at Asbury!"

That's because you're not squinting your eye and holding your mouth just right! HAHAHAHA!

 

"Wait a minute... I know what this is! It's the Sisters In Faith luncheon, isn't it? I recognize Judy Wilburn and Beth Ballance."

 

You're correct! Neither of them were at the purple-clad table where I parked my keister, though.

I chose it for the color, of course! Patti Steinhauser, on the far left, was already there. Then we were joined by Debbie Wright, CeCe Coleman, Robin Eifler, and Sandra, the mother of Jenni from the April luncheon. 

  

"Steinhauser? Isn't that the surname of the guy in the band?"

 

Yep, it sure is! Tim was there to entertain us this time, too, but the guys called themselves the Beached Bums today! he even had her come up and sing with them for "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow PolkaDot Bikini"!!! Very funny bit, with him wearing that swimsuit!!! Well, kinda sorta. LOL!!!

 

"Nice music for y'all's day 'at the beach'! I see there was even a beach ball!"

 

Actually, that was the "talking" ball, passed around with the holder of it asked to share a favorite story about the beach with us. Guess what? I got up and did that! I told all about Mama taking us four kids to the beach often during the summer, with a jug of water and peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches. We'd play on the beach and in the water there at Tybee for hours! That let her have some peace and quiet. Then we'd stop by the Sugar Shack on the way home and get malteds and milkshakes, and that would keep us quiet for the drive. Fun for all of us!

 

"That's a really nice memory."

 

Yeah, and it got other Savannahians talking about memories of their summers at Tybee. I really loved that! I'm glad that Asbury is one place where I'm not the only local gal.

 

"Me, too. And did you have any hot dog buns to bring home?"

 

Nope! All 16 of those buns got eaten! Good!!! Now, I'm going to take care of a few things here at home, like charging my phone. American Legion Post 36 is supposed to have its monthly meeting at 6 PM, so I'll stay in town until it's done, then head back to Stella. Good thing it's rainy, or she'd be upset about missing the party on the patio. Maybe tomorrow will have a sunny spot in it for her!

"You mean, catching up with Dawn, right? I know darn well you were not up at the break of day to do anything."

 

Hey, you know me! Though I do wake up around that time to go pee. The sun comes streaming gloriously into my personal aquarium to let me know it's there! I usually will take another dose of acetaminophen then, too, before crawling back into bed for another coupla hours.

 

"So your right leg is still painful???"

 

As I tell everyone, it is so much better than it was, but it's not quite normal. But it's better enough that I'm only taking about 2000 to 2500 milligrams of pain relief, instead of maxing out every day at 3000. What I need to do is get my happy ass to the purple planet and start back on the treadmill. Soon, I promise!

 

"Yes, I've heard that before... but that harangue will wait for another time. Tell me about your luncheon with the Georgetown lass!"

 

That was at The King & I, naturally, so we could both get our Thai food fix. Between travels with her sales job and travels with family, she's out of town a lot. So, these luncheons are the one on one time we get every six to eight weeks. Last weekend, she was up in Virginia visiting two of her nieces before sales meetings on Monday. Friday, she leaves for California to meet with some friends before sales meetings on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, she and Chris will be off to Chicago to visit his ailing uncle, her bestie Elaine, and other friends and family. My guess is some of that will be a celebration of her upcoming 62nd birthday.

 

"No doubt. I remember how much traveling you once did at her age! I know that was just six years ago, but there's been a lot of changes for your body since 2022. The A-fib really slowed you down for a while there. Then you had that inguinal hernia issue since last August. It's all conspired to keep you closer to home."

 

Don't remind me. At least I've been getting mini-vacations at her house! Another of those is coming up on Wednesday! It's almost like going to a resort, as they have such beautiful views in the front and back of their house. And I'll be there until Father's Day! Four mornings that I can have breakfast on the back porch with Stella, watching birds on the canal!

 

"I'm thinking you won't have to be like Goldilocks with the beds this time. Now that the urinary tract infection has been cured, your kidneys won't be hurting like they were."

 

Hey, good point! I've been sleeping better at home, too. I was waking every couple of hours, sometimes having to switch to the other side of my bed. Honestly, I was thinking I might need to buy a new mattress! Glad that's not an issue now!!

 

"You never did say what you ate during y'all's two-hour luncheon. Just what dish does that lovely photo document?"

 

It's 'The King & I Salad' and it marries two of the things I enjoy: Nam Sod and a crispy, flavorful plate of veggies! I say 'Nam Sod', but the pork was not ground up, like in that dish. It's still seasoned the same, but in slices. So very good!!! I really should post that in TripAdvisor.

 

"You sure are having a lot of salads these days."

 

I am absolutely determined to never, ever have to deal with an inguinal hernia again. Never, ever. Salads help keep the bowel movements regular and easy, and I've really noticed the difference. Ya gotta give those intestinal muscles something to squish and move along!!

 

"Yeah, okay, I hear you, but I think I'll move along now."

 

Do what ya gotta do, dearie! (smile!)

That's what Miyah told me when she gave me that Strawberry Gnome.

My first niece had surprised me with a luncheon today, after her labwork to see if she qualified for a new GLP-1 product.

As we have done for her previous doctor appointments over the last few years, that meant dining at Barnes Restaurant, for comfort foods she couldn't get elsewhere.

I totally get that.

On this occasion, Anthony joined us, along with the kids, who he'd been tending during her appointment.

Miyah and Chloe both wanted to sit by me, but the table wasn't quite big enough for that, but we fixed that!

Miyah sat on my side of the table and Chloe sat on the end near me - yep, that worked just fine!

This was not meant to be a birthday luncheon, but I took it to be.

After all, they'd come up from Hinesville and chose to spend time with me, near the time of my bday68, so I counted it as a birthday treat!

As for that silly gift, I think I'll regard it as a joke.

Yes, that would be just the ticket!

Now, Eric has arrived to open the doors at Two First Posts for tonight's meeting, so I'm going into the coolness!

today, i had a luncheon with ATL peeps

It was at The Pirates' House, so that was very nice!

The folks in charge of AARP Georgia's volunteers wanted to show their appreciation for us, and they certainly did!

The branches in Macon, Augusta, Columbus, and Savannah all hosted luncheons for their members, but we were extra special!

See that young man standing there?

He's John Strong, the guy in charge of organizing the volunteers for the entire state and making sure they have what they need.

 

And see that young woman working on those red boxes in the corner?

She's "1 in 460", according to John Strong.

He went through 460 applicants for her position and decided she was the very best of the lot... and he's right!

Gabrielle Richardson has already been dealing with us via email, helping to set up our meetings on a regular basis.

As well as organizing this luncheon in the "Anne Bonny" room, she also brought those beautiful gift boxes!!!

I'm going to regard that as a bday68 present for me!

Just look at all the goodies she has in there!

There's an insulated mug and two stone coasters...

a journal and pen, no doubt for keeping notes during our zoom meetings...

a back-up battery for phones or laptops, so we don't drop out...

a mesh bag with body lotion and lip balm to keep us soothed...

plus all sorts of snacky foods to enjoy at the monthly ZOOMS.

Ah, but that's not all!

It holds a VANILLA VISA gift card for $25!!!

And where someone's name might be, she had it imprinted with these words: "THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO".

I made sure to thank her copiously for all that bounty!

I even told her that giving us the luncheon at The Pirates' House would have been thanks enough!

This was the first time I'd met the other Savannah volunteers.

Sure, we'd seen each other onscreen, but not face to face.

They made sure I new I was welcome and they wanted me to stay...

after all, I'm the sole blanched almond in the brownie pan, to paraphrase what Kim Polote said.

She had referred to herself repeatedly as the "lone chocolate chip in the cookie dough" as she told tales two weeks ago of her school days.

I had known exactly what she meant.

I'm usually one of 100 white people at the Savannah Black Heritage events.

I'm usually one of 100 gentiles at the Savannah Jewish Cultural Arts Festival events.

I was the first-ever female of 50 US Navy sailors stationed at Galeta Island in Panama.

I was almost always the lone female CTM on shifts in Hanza, Okinawa, and in Imperial Beach, California.

Right now, I know that AARP GA has a mission to become more diverse.

I do hope to see that mission be successful!

What a great luncheon and gift from strangers, just for being a volunteer!

That Irving Berlin song from 1933 has been on my mind ever since the theme of this Sisters In Faith luncheon was announced last month.

Such a catchy little number!

I fashioned my head-topper by wrapping the Periodic Table scarf around the bright pink bowl of the hat that always brings happy thoughts of Mama.

Thanks, Cathy of El Cerrito, for that gift!

It went so well with my Spring-time dress!

That's what Linda Combs and Michelle Meece told me, so I know it to be true!

Here they are, with our gracious event planner wearing one of the cutest hats there!

Just look at those bunny ears!!!

Linda, I just know Bugs Bunny would be thrilled, too!!!

Those were more bunny ears, too.

That's Sherry Giddens, at the end of my table, sporting huge ears atop her bonnet!

Judy Wilburn's summer hat boasted flowers against its straw!

And there were three ladies at the table beside us who all wore flower-bedecked bonnets! 

That's Kathy Hodges, in the pink dress, in the middle, between the lady in the orange hat and the one in the green.

My table had a mother and daughter wearing bonnets!

The daughter, Jenni, had her 61st birthday yesterday.

Her mom, Sandra, tried to scoot out of the photo, but I caught her!

To me, they were the belles of this ball at Holliday Hall - they brought three boxes of Chick-Fil-A nuggets!!!

I signed up to bring finger sandwiches, substituting two trays of sushi.

(That's them between the chips and tower of cucumber sandwiches.)

Cheri Hester brought sushi, too, as did one other - so much for me bringing something different!

That just meant I had sushi to take home for dinner tonight.

(smile!)

Here's the array of Easter bonnets that came today, arranged in competition on the stage here at Asbury Memorial's social hall.

I bet there were at least fifteen!!!

That's Linda and Michelle, making sure each entry has been assigned a number for the voting process.

 

The winner was worn by Cece Colman!

That's her, on the left, with the Mexican sombrero-style hat with all the fringe and little Easter bunnies.

I bet that laden bonnet weighed at least ten pounds!

That's means I wouldn't have been able to pick it up, per post-surgery orders, for at least another three weeks.

That's pretty impressive, as was the hat with the twinkle lights!

Here's a funny story!

Right after I snapped that photo, the two women realized their hats had gotten snagged.

Oh, no!

But I have plenty of practice with branches in my long hair, so set to work untangling Cece's fringe from Mary's foliage.

I just let my fingers feel their way, loosening the two from each other, just as I've done in my yard on many occasions.

Hooray!

And who was our guest speaker today?

Kim Polote, someone I'd rescued from a clothing emergency years ago!

It was while I was a volunteer usher at the Lucas Theatre.

She was to perform in a Christmas show, but the gown she was in didn't quite fit at the top of the bodice.

I happened to be in the bathroom when she was in distress about her dress...

and I happened to have several safety pins with me...

so, calamity avoided and distress dispersed!

Right place, right time!

Of course, that's been at least fifteen years ago.

Today, she was there to share songs with us at this happy luncheon!

"Wind Beneath My Wings" was merged seamlessly into "Over The Rainbow" before she said her first words to us.

Later, led us all in singing "This Little Light Of Mine", clapping joyously!

Then she gave us "Change Is Gonna Come" and one her own songs, "Everything Must Change".

In between all that music, she told her life stories and encouraged us to "find the message in the mess" life sometimes hands us.

Absolutely lovely!

She also talked of celebrating the joy wherever we find it, even in a movie, such as "Me, You & Tuscany"...

and I spoke up that I'd just seen it yesterday!!!

That made her smile and got everyone's attention. 

Right place, right time!

today, i had a luncheon!

Nothing fancy, mind.

We went to Cici's Pizza, 'cause we all love it and they don't yet have one in Hinesville.

"We" means, me, the first niece, and her two darling daughters!

This was taken at the time that Chloe and Miyah came to ask for money for the game room.

That's a usual occurrence. 

Christina was prepared: a game card purchased before!

Each girl got $1 for whichever game or prize machine they wanted.

Chloe came back with three prizes from her machine!!!

Pretty cool.

Pretty cool that they were in town, too, on this blustery day.

I'd invited them to go see "The Croods" at NCG with me, as it was just $2.

Instead, they were already coming to visit Christina's Nana.

She's been in the hospital the last few days, with a worsening of the blood cancer she's had for the last two decades.

I do hope she is going to get better.

Meanwhile, I got to have lunch with my first niece.

when irish eyes are smiling, danny boy!

Those were the first two songs at our Sisters In Faith luncheon!

Kristen Kelso was there with her guitar to regale us with song in Holliday Hall, and I just know that Miss Virginia was with us!!

Kristen followed those two with "Hallelujah". 

Hoping to lighten the theme, I requested "The Unicorn Song", and even sang a few lines - "There's cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born, you're never gonna see no unicorn" - but she'd never played it before.

Instead, she sang "The Sound Of Music", no doubt to honor Michelle Meece who'd just finished a three-week run starring in that musical.

That's Michelle, dressed as a leprechaun in suspenders and a tam!

Then Kristen did an oldie from 1952: "It's Saint Patrick's Day In Savannah".

That definitely put a spring back into the room!

(smile!) 

And what was on the menu for this luncheon?

Breakfast!!!

Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, blueberry pancakes!

Banana nut muffins, breakfast casseroles, fruit salads!

But no grits, no biscuits, not from these Northern transplants!

So glad I was joined by Kathy Hodges, Barbara Gooby, Rhonda Reed, and Robin Eifler at my table!

Plus, fellow Sister-in-Faith Cece was there, sitting by Kathy.

Another Kathy - Mayin - was to come, but didn't make it.

I saved her a seat by me, just the same!

Perhaps the weather was not quite as nice as she'd hoped.

It was supposed to be well into the 70's today, but that's not until tomorrow it seems.

That's okay, the weather song shows a true lilt for the weekend!

So good to hear Beatles' music!

So good to be at this Sisters In Faith Valentines party and luncheon!

Gail brought Belgian chocolates, Robin made Chinese chicken salad, Charlene had a citrus beet salad, Heidi baked a carrot cake, and the brioche rolls were from me.

That's just from the people at my table!

Plus, Linda had little cups of chocolates on the tables for each of us!

Then there was birthday cake!

Here's Linda Combs singing to Huxsie Scott, dressed in purple for her special day!

We all chimed in, of course!

And before we concluded our two-hour sharing of sisterhood, Huxsie regaled us with song.

"It Must Be Love" was the oldie she brought to the table, as all of us - and two babies! - listened to her soulful voice.

What a perfect way to bring a close to this gathering!

Not even the cold temperatures outside could keep me in today!

This was the designated day for the Sisters In Faith luncheon and I had volunteered to bring two prizes for the bingo games.

I had to be there!!!

And so I went, bundling up in two sweaters and my Cracker Barrel poncho-coat for the drive to Asbury Memorial, bag in hand. 

Thankfully, I was met with a plethora of others who'd turned out and turned up for this friendship gathering - hooray!

We each had a tinfoil tiara awaiting us, as well as a gilded tooter to blow when we had a bingo - TOOT!!!

Charlene was the first at our table to get a bingo.

That was on the second game, too.

So she was the first of us to get to choose a prize from the gift table!

Soon enough, I had a bingo on one of my two game boards!

"TOOT!!!"

I was the first one to actually do that instead of saying 'Bingo!", of course!

Linda Combs was elated that I followed her directions!

I chose the wire basket of fancy soaps - I know four little blondes who will like those 'eggs'!

(smile!)

I was the third person at our table to win.

I resolved to not take any more prizes.

Then I noticed that Pam was only playing one of her cards, trying to keep up... and I had another b-i-n-g-o about to happen... and when it did, I pushed the card in front of her and said, "Pam, you have a bingo!"

She perked right up and was thrilled!!!

I thought only my tablemates caught what I did.

Nope!

Tim Steinhauser, our bingo caller, saw it, too.

He alluded to how nice it was to see us 'sharing the wealth' instead of being like August.

Apparently, August had won three games the last time bingo was played!

I guess that's why he left today before the games began - Tim and Linda were both teasing him!

I stayed until the ginger ale toast!

First, we all sang "Auld Lang Syne", led by Michelle Meece - I may have been the only one who knew the words.

Then I clinked glasses with my tablemates - Charlene Branan, Pam Kress, Robin Eifler, Shirley Horovitz, Kay, and another Kay - then took my leave before the last round of bingo.

I have a new event, starting at 2.

Better go while I'm out!

Christmas luncheon with a chemist!

Of course I'm talkin' 'bout retiree Yvonne!

We were at Olive Garden, naturally, and her neighbor, Toni, was with us.

Such a lovely two-hour respite we had from the world as we dined on soups and salads!

They had tasks to run in town, or there's no telling how long we might have lingered!

The sun was shining and the day was warm enough to not have a jacket, which was nice.

It'll be horrid tomorrow morning and again on Sunday, but there's good news in that WSAV weather song.

Christmas and Christmas Eve will be in the 70's!!!

i thank You, God!!!

That will make the family gathering at Tony and Laura's better for all!!!

Speaking of making things better for all, remember those items I'd donated to my first niece for the School Store?

That was to allow the students of the elementary school the opportunity to 'buy' gifts for their family members and friends.

She sent me this photo of the leftover items, with the shelves nearly bare and only a few things on the tree and table.

Such a big success, she said!

I'm so blessed to have been able to help!

four calling birds!

That was the line that Virginia and I and a silent singer had to sing and pantomime.

Fortunately, I'd seen the People's Youth Choir in action two years ago, so I could coach the others on what to do.

"We just place our hands to imitate a megaphone at our mouth!"

That worked out just fine all nine times that our part came up in "The Twelve Days Of Christmas"! 

The table beside us were tasked with "partridge in a pear tree".

What a cute act they choose for that line!

That was good, as they had to perform for all twelve stanzas.

However, the group that got the most crowd reaction was the table right in front of us.

Here they are, doing the squat of "six geese a-laying"!

It was such a hoot!!!

Bird pun intended! 

I'm so glad that Michelle Meece asked us to do that song for her!

It was a favorite in her family that her dad always led.

Here, she's performing "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas".

She truly has such a nice voice and a great stlye!

I think she looked like a cross between Cindy Lou Who and an elf for our Sisters In Faith Christmas luncheon party.

Very cute!

Yes, we were all gathered at Asbury Memorial, in Holliday Hall, and I'm sure Miss Virginia was there celebrating with us!

Linda Combs had called out the big guns for this event.

That's Huxsie Scott on that throne!!!

She's been a well-regarded songbird of Savannah for several decades.

She was there to sing "Because It's Christmas", a favorite song of Linda's, and one that I had never heard before.

What a treat!

Speaking of such, there was lots of good food!

There were several different kinds of tea sandwiches, reminding me of Aunt Linda's birthday celebration - good times!

I also enjoyed the sweets - so many different desserts, including that cake with coconut and pecans and dark chocolate chips!

 

I arrived late, due to the noon appointment with Dr. Urban at Savannah VA.

Noon was also the start time of this soiree!

Still, I'd been waiting six months for the eye check, so that had priority...

but I so wanted to go to the party...

and when he heard my dilemma, he let me go!

It helped that I'd not yet had the neurology meeting that he'd wanted me to have before this visit.

All told, I made it to the church while Dottie Klutz was telling a story from her youth in Germany.

Perfect!

I was able to grab a plate of food and the empty seat beside Robin Eifler with no one paying any mind to me!

Hallelujah!!!

Afterward, I helped put away the chairs and tables and decor, as I'd promised to do.

And I ended up with two goodie bags instead of one!

That's because Virginia's bag had a Christmas card in it that started out, incredibly, with "Dear Tina"... so she insisted that I take it and wouldn't take my bag in trade.

Whoever wrote the card didn't sign it, so I have no idea who to thank.

I'll be sure to enjoy the lavender hand soap, given by a secret Santa.

"You don't have any sisters. You only have brothers."

I have Sisters In Faith! Today, we had our monthly luncheon at Asbury Memorial and there were 71 of us attending!

"Wow. That's twice as many as last month, isn't it?"

I think there might have been over 40 at that one.

"Such a pretty place setting!"

Linda Combs had a program at each of the six tables. Ceecee made the pretty little bracelets for each of us!

"Very nice! And who was the guest speaker this time?"

It was Dawn Rodriguez of The Living Vine. That's a home for up to 6 teen mothers and their babies, to teach them how to live on their own.

"Oh, that's the place that's associated with Blessingdale's Thrift Store, tight? And the home is located where the old Florence Crittenton's house for pregnant girls was?"

Good memory, though it hasn't been called that for many years. As for the thrift shop, they had comedy going on, pre-pandemic. I was glad to hear it was still active. Now that Home Again has closed, I should take the stuff I'd culled to go there over to Blessingdale's so someone can get use from it. You know - it would be good for my excess to go home again with a new owner.

Two last bites. I wasn't sure which food I wanted as the final taste in my mouth. The pecan pie or the mac-n-cheese, which would win out?

"The battle of the sweet versus the savory! Such a decision to make! So, which bite won?"

I chose the savory as the final, though I certainly made sure to savor the sweet beforehand. Such difficult choices! (smile!)
