roast beast with spears!

The flight tonight took off without a hitch and flew smoothly and gracefully to its destination.
You recall that there was a flight from San Sebastian Winery to Nicoll Street, right? True, it had been delayed for over a year, but the wait did no harm to the travelers and they were well received.
Yeah!
The physicist had prepared American soul food - i.e., roast beef with potatoes and carrots - to complement the three reds which made the flight. The asparagus echoed the meal which had inspired the invitation to dine downtown.
So, let's meet the flyers, shall we?
First, of course, was dear Rosa, a fine, mildly sweet girl, very light on the tongue. The beef was bit overpowering for her, but she was delightful, and I do mean delightful with the chocolate almond straws for dessert. Delightful!
The Reds, however, were a perfect duo for the roasted meat. Sipped alternately, the Castillo was full-bodied and dry, bringing out the darker depths of the dish, while the Vintners, with its wetter flash of summer muscadines, accentuated the country heart of the pot roast.
All in all, a wonderful evening of two friends dining in style, talking like old times, eating ginger cookies, petting the two kittehs, and laughing over a video of found footage.
Sweet dreams, to you, too, dear friend.

one (dinner) leads to another, yeah, yeah, yeah

Rosa, Take 1, Tuesday, 28 Feb, a little after 8 PM:
Cue visual:

me: Salmon and capers pasta with asparagus and Rosa

bfe: That looks so good!
bfe: And with Rosa! I've missed her so much!
bfe: Would you give her a kiss on the cheek for me?

me: Hey man I will lick her wet self clean!

bfe: That sounds very dirty Faustina!

me: I had been saving her for a flight but i don't want her to languish any longer.

bfe: Wait... Rosa... that's not a person is it?!?!

me: :-) thought you might get a tickle out of that
me: Not a person. 4 sure.

bfe: That's smart of you... and you do not want her to go bad... when girls go bad!
bfe: Hey I listened to your cd Saturday! It was like evey famous jazz song that you knew but didn't know!

me: I know! really good tunes.

bfe: Ha ha!
bfe: So what nights do you teach?

me: M and W

bfe: Do you have plans next Tuesday?

me: I seem to be free. I just checked my schedule.

bfe: Your secretary let you know?!?!? That's what I always joke with my students! ;)
bfe: Well how about you come over Tuesday and I will feel you and we can watch the found footage festival DVD you got me a year or so ago? Would you be up for that?

me: Sho nuff.
me: You're going to 'feel' me? lol. Make that 'feed' and can do.

bfe: That sounds awesome. I will check with you on Sunday that the meal will be ok with you. Does that sound good?

me: :-)

bfe: Ha ha. Autocorrect you are so funny. Sorry, feeling you requires payment of service and I only do that behind the dumpsters at Forsythe!

me: Hey, what you do on your time is your biz. So a flight on Tuesday it shall be.

bfe: I look forward to Tuesday and sorry how you had to learn about my part time job to make ends match :(

me: :-) easier and more money than hawking wares on ebay.

bfe: :) just you lose a little more dignity with each passing blow. *ahem*

nice lunch! nicer dinner!

Today, the university treated me to a free lunch. Well, actually, they had invited me, and 49 others, for the Estate Planning Seminar, as I am on the list of alumni who have expressed an interest in leaving some money to the school.
The lunch was very nice: moist pork loin topped with mushroom gravy, roasted new potatoes, crisp salad greens with some yum dressing... and lemon cake. I made sure to eat my cake with my meal, as pork likes a little sweet, and sweet with a bite is even better!
Afterward, I went home and settled in for the ice storm to come.
Brrr!
For my pre-storm dinner, I decided to open up a bottle which had been languishing in the wine rack for a year.
Which bottle, you ask?
Yes, I am aware that I have several bought in December of 2012 for a flight with the bfe - a flight which has, sadly, remained grounded.
Very well!
San Sebastian's Rosa would dine with me, to remind me of sunshine!
And there would be no soup tonight, oh, no!
This fine wine calls for
a much nicer meal than that!
Time to saute that aging asparagus
with a little evoo.
Then to combine flaked salmon
with petite diced tomatoes
and capers and allow the flavors to meld in the oven while the corkscrew pasta becomes al dente.
And here it is, a meal fit for a queen!
Then to watch a little Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" - I do so enjoy that movie!
Hey! I may even make it a Broderick mini-film fest! I could watch "Ladyhawke" afterward!
Nice plan for a stay at home evening!

and there was even a cake!

I certainly had not expected that a birthday cake would be included with dinner!
I had gone to Bill's house for dinner, to make my apologies yet again for Sunday. You see, he and I were to have gone to the ball game together, using the box seat tickets of the baseball girls duo. Then, I had an opportunity to see my stepmom and her two grandsons that same day, so I took it! Next thing you know, I had turned it into a family affair, using some of my season tickets, inviting my eldest brother and his clan as well as my first niece and her bunch. The more, the merrier, right?
But Bill and his dog got left out, when all was said and done. My phone had died prior to the game even starting. Not good. I could use other phones to contact my family members, as their numbers are prior to my cell phone days. But I did not know his number. Not good. I did look for him several times, and even left his ticket with the box office. Not quite good enough.
So I had arranged a dinner with him, being careful to not say anything about my birthday. He suggested dinner at his place, so I could have a little time with his therapy dog. Cool beans!
I brought two bottles of my lovely stash from the monks of San Sebastian. After all, I had been in the wrong and I wanted to try to make things right again. Knowing him to be a fan of vineyard products, proffering two bottles of my favorite lovelinesses should at least be a good start! I brought the Castillo Red, a rich and dry wine that still spoke of muscadines, and, of course, the grapefruit-tinged Blanc du Bois. Truly, I regard that wine as treasure!
I was greeted with a hug and a tail wag, so all was good. Then we chatted for a bit on the porch, sipping a glass of the red, admiring its color and taste. Good! Chillin' with a friend and vino!
We dined on a Mediterranean-style grilled chicken salad, easy on the feta. (I had lactase!) And, of course, Castillo Red - very nice! We eventually even opened up the second bottle, to enjoy with the birthday cake and, later, while relaxing in the back yard, post-meal. And we admired the lovely artwork he had hung in the dining room, the lovely piece of himself he was gifting to me.
You see, he had told me in October, at his annual Feast of Saint Francis of Assissi, that the multi-media piece was mine. I had openly admired it, telling him that I had wanted it for years, but knew I could not afford it. And he told me it was mine. He had a policy with himself: if someone truly loved one of his pieces, then he would gift them with it, knowing the child of his creative muse would have a good home. I knew nothing of that policy or I doubt I would have spoken of my love for "Ocean, Tumultuous". That is my name for the piece, not his.
And he gave it to me. Just like that. At that very moment last fall. He said he would put a mount on it, as it was still easel-bound, but he would get a mount on it so I could hang it in my house. I had tried to tell him that he was being too generous, that he could sell it instead. But he had insisted that it could never belong to another since he knew I loved it so.
And now, he had the Ocean ready to come home with me.
Today.
This very evening.
In time for my birthday.
Incredible.
It now occupies the place of honor in my living room, greeting myself and every guest of my home with each opening of the front door.
Thank you, Bill.

tuesday, tuesday in the afternoon

With a nod to Morphine, and thanks to management, I did not have to wait for Thursday for relief. By high noon, I was transferred to a new suite, a safe haven from the nightmares of the night before. I'm operating on just a few hours sleep, but I feel compelled to share what a fabulous day this has been since my transfer to the ninth floor of the DBR.
For starters, this is the new view I have. Not an ocean view room, but an oceanSIDE room. That means I'll hear the murmuring of the waves as I drift to sleep, and the singing of the sea as i wake in the morning. Heavenly music!
Also, the layout of this suite is completely different. The eleventh floor suite may have been larger, but THIS is a much more comfortable place to me. As well as not having a boogie man lurking on the balcony, the living area is a completely separate space from the bedroom. For whatever reason, that "feels" safer mentally to me. And, that is the important issue: feeling safer. Mental peace of mind.
So, after being rescued from the depths of my mind, I cruised up to Saint Augustine to visit a few of my favorite sites. The Black Knight Deli, home of freshly, and lovingly, made Polish foods, was open and manned by its owner, Vince. Yeah!!! I loaded up my huge cooler with pierogi stuffed with sauerkraut and black mushroom, pork and rice-filled golumbki (that's stuffed cabbage, to those not in the know!), and a huge coil of fresh kielbasa. YUM!!! I'm even planning to share some with my ex when he is in town next week. After all, if not for sixteen years with him, I wouldn't even be half-versed in these foods, and that would be a shame.
After getting my fill of future delights, I needed a fix from another favorite: the colorful and garlic-rich Gypsy Cab Company. Oh, yeah, baby! For lunch, I dined on grilled salmon, in some yummy, savorful sauce, getting maximum enjoyment for as long as I could. Oh, how I longed for more as the last bite entered my lips! Perhaps I'll wander that way again in a few days... but I doubt it. There are so many wonderful eateries HERE that I have not yet tried. You know?
And now that my hunger had been sated, it was time to slake my thirst... for Blanc Du Bois, that is. I don't usually go for white wines, as they tend toward sweet rather than dry, but THIS one... Ah, this one is THE BEST! The monks at San Sebastian Winery have created this divine liquid from the grapes of Florida, and I am so very hooked on it. It's been quite a few years since I quaffed this elixir and I so look forward to uncorking a bottle soon. Oh, yes. For now, the bottles of that dry, grapefruit-tinged delight will wait, as will the sassy-smooth Rosa and the aptly-named Castillo Red. I even relented to include the Vintner's Red, to create a flight of fancy for the taste buds.
Yes, Merry Christmas! I think I'm finally full of the spirit!
